What inspires your artwork?

My art is inspired by wild waters, fishing heritage, and Pennsylvania wildlife. I fished the Allegheny River with my dad, and my dad and grandfather fished Lake Erie’s Misery Bay together. With 35+ years of fly fishing, I bring patience, presence, and connection to every piece.

What subjects do you paint?

I create vibrant mixed-media paintings of fish, wildlife, and symbols from nature—trout, walleye, northern pike, deer, mushrooms, and birds of prey—blending bright color with storytelling about memory and transformation.

Are originals and prints available for purchase?

Yes. You can buy originals, open-edition prints, and notecard sets on my website. Listings include size, materials, and framing details. Free shipping is included within the lower 48 states.

Do you take commissions?

Yes—custom fishing and wildlife pieces that tell your personal story, such as a favorite fish, meaningful catch, or water-time memory.

How are your prints made and shipped?

Open-edition prints are professionally produced by a family-owned local print shop (60+ years in business) on quality, thicker paper. Each print is signed, rolled with protective paper, and shipped in a sturdy cardboard mailing tube for safe delivery.

Where can I see your art in person?

You can find HL Wirtner’s work at Transit Art Gallery & Gifts in Oil City, Pennsylvania, and at select regional art festivals and wildlife shows in northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio. Upcoming events are listed on the site and social channels.

What’s the difference between an original and a print?

This piece is part of my Great Lakes Fish Collection and it reflects a nostalgic connection to water and family.

This walleye piece was inspired by growing up on the outskirts of Erie where the lake is known for its strong walleye fishing. I wanted to create something that honored that fish and the waters that shaped so many memories. It also brings back the memory of the large walleye my dad caught on the Allegheny River and how proud he was of it. The fish carries rich texture and detail while the blue water behind it stays flatter and calm. The raw wood edge frames the scene in a natural way and reminds you where it all began.
