FAQs
Q: What inspires your artwork?
A: My art is inspired by wild waters, fishing heritage, and Pennsylvania wildlife. I grew up fishing with my father on the Allegheny River, while my dad and grandfather shared their own stories of fishing together on Lake Erie’s Misery Bay. Those family memories flow through everything I create. After more than 35 years of fly fishing, I’ve learned that time on the water teaches patience, presence, and connection — lessons that come to life in every brushstroke. Each painting carries memory, symbolism, and a deep respect for the waters that shaped us.
Q: What kinds of subjects do you paint?
A: I create vibrant mixed-media paintings of fish, wildlife, and the natural world — from trout, walleye, and northern pike to deer, mushrooms, and birds of prey. Every piece blends bright color with storytelling, exploring cycles of life, transformation, and memory. My art resonates with nature lovers, anglers, and collectors who want meaningful pieces for their homes or cabins.
Q: Are your prints and originals available for purchase?
A: Yes. You can buy fine art prints, originals, and notecard sets directly from my website at www.hlwirtner.com. Each listing includes artwork size, materials, and framing details. Free shipping is included within the lower 48 states.
Q: Do you take commissions for custom artwork?
A: Yes — I offer custom fishing and wildlife commissions that tell your personal story through art. These may include a favorite fish species, a meaningful catch, or a symbolic piece inspired by your time on the water. I don’t create traditional landscape scenes, but I love working with collectors to design pieces that celebrate fish, wildlife, and memory. Visit my Commissions page or contact me directly to begin your project.
Q: How are your fine art prints made?
A: My open edition fine art prints are professionally produced by a family-owned local print shop that’s been in business for over 60 years. Each print is created on high-quality, thicker paper that captures the detail and color of the original artwork beautifully. Every print is personally signed and carefully rolled with protective paper before being shipped in a sturdy cardboard mailing tube to ensure safe arrival.
Q: Where can I see your art in person?
A: My work is available at Transit Art Gallery & Gifts in Oil City, Pennsylvania, and at select regional art festivals and wildlife shows throughout northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio. You can find upcoming exhibits and events listed on my website and social media pages.
Q: What’s the difference between an original painting and a fine art print?
A: Original paintings are one-of-a-kind mixed-media works created on wood panel or canvas. Fine art prints are high-quality reproductions of those originals — each one signed by me. Prints offer an affordable way to collect my art while still bringing the same spirit, color, and story into your home.
Q: What’s the meaning or philosophy behind your artwork?
A: My art celebrates connection, memory, and the living rhythm of water. I believe art should carry story and soul — not just color. Each piece transforms flat walls into living stories that reflect who you are, spark conversation, and bring the calm energy of wild waters into your space.
Q: Can I pick up my order instead of having it shipped?
A: Yes! During checkout, you can choose pickup at either the Oil City Gallery or the Foxburg Gallery. Local pickup is a great option for nearby collectors and ensures your artwork travels safely.
Q: How should I care for my artwork?
A: Keep your fine art prints and originals out of direct sunlight and away from high humidity. Even though my prints are open edition, they’re created with quality materials designed to last and maintain their color and vibrancy with proper care.
Q: Are your artworks good gifts for anglers and women who fish?
A: Definitely. My paintings and prints make unique gifts for anglers, fly-fishers, and outdoor enthusiasts. They’re especially meaningful for women who fish — whether seasoned anglers or those beginning their own fly-fishing adventures. My art celebrates the spirit, strength, and serenity found on the water, making it a perfect gift for anyone who loves fishing and nature.
