This painting grew from my love of fall and from spending my childhood just outside Erie where brown trout and steelhead have always felt tied to the season. Both species spawn in the fall and that rhythm has stayed with me since my steelhead fishing days. I wanted to give the scene a warm autumn look because most people do not picture these fish as fall creatures. I started thinking about how old Christmas trees get dropped into ponds to create habitat and wondered what a fall version of that idea might be. Pumpkins felt perfect. A jack-o-lantern made me smile and brought a fun sense of the season. I used stencils and acrylic mediums to build layers of texture in the plants and the water and the pumpkin came alive with its carved grin. The fish patterns and depth in the background pulled everything together and the whole piece landed exactly how I hoped.
