Colorful queen angelfish gather beside a giant barrel sponge among bright coral. The Gathering is part of Connected by Water, a collection inspired by the places and wildlife of the Florida Reef Tract.
Queen angelfish are colorful residents of Florida’s coral reefs, where sponges are an important part of their diet. Giant barrel sponges are sometimes called the “redwoods of the reef.” These animals filter seawater for food and oxygen. A single giant barrel sponge can filter more than 1,000 gallons of water each day, helping keep the surrounding water clear and providing habitat for other reef life.
This small original celebrates the connections between reef animals and the living structures that support them.
