Young green sea turtles move through blue water among mangrove roots, with small fish nearby. Sheltered by the Roots is part of Connected by Water, a collection inspired by the places and wildlife of the Florida Reef Tract.
Juvenile green sea turtles can find food and shelter in the protected waters around mangrove forests. As they grow, they move into shallow coastal habitats where seagrasses and algae become important foods. Around the red mangrove roots, fish find hiding places while oysters, barnacles, sponges, and other small organisms add to a rich underwater community. From tiny creatures to young sea turtles, mangroves help connect and support life throughout the Florida Keys ecosystem.
This small original celebrates the shelter mangrove roots provide for a wide range of marine life.
