A young shark and small fish find shelter among the tangled roots of a red mangrove. Rooted Community is part of Connected by Water, a collection inspired by the places and wildlife of the Florida Reef Tract.
Red mangrove roots host a lively underwater community. They provide shelter for juvenile sharks, fish, and crabs, while young mangroves, called propagules, take root and grow. The roots also support oysters, barnacles, sponges, and other organisms that help keep the water clean. Oysters can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day, making them an important part of a healthy mangrove ecosystem.
This small original celebrates the many forms of life that depend on mangrove roots.
