River’s Majesty began with a stack of stones built near a small island in the Allegheny River. One day, while I was sitting along the riverbank, a kingfisher suddenly dove into the water. It caught a fish and flew toward the island. Then it landed at the very top of the stones.
That unexpected moment brought the whole scene to life.
Look closely and you will find more of the river’s story. Empty mussel shells rest on the bottom stone. Living mussels appear partly buried beneath the water. A small crayfish is also hidden among the underwater rocks.
At three feet wide and four feet high, River’s Majesty is my largest painting so far. Its size surrounds you with the color, movement, and life of the Allegheny River. It was created for someone who feels at home near the water and wants that connection to become part of their home.
