A mother manatee and her calf graze through a green seagrass meadow as sunlight streams into the water. Meadow Lessons is part of Connected by Water, a collection inspired by the places and wildlife of the Florida Reef Tract.
Florida manatees depend on healthy seagrass meadows for much of their food. They spend hours each day grazing and can eat up to 10% of their body weight. A mother usually gives birth to one calf, which stays with her for about two years while learning important survival skills. Pollution and harmful algae can reduce seagrass and take away an important food source for these gentle grazers.
This small original celebrates the bond between a mother manatee and her calf, and the healthy seagrass they depend on.
