Colorful rainbow parrotfish graze across a bright coral reef. As they feed, these important fish help create the fine white sand found on tropical shores. Making Beaches is part of Connected by Water, a collection inspired by the places and wildlife of the Florida Reef Tract.
Parrotfish use their powerful, beak-like teeth to scrape algae from reef surfaces and help keep it in check. They also grind up bits of the reef’s calcium-carbonate structure as they feed. This material passes through their bodies and is released as fine sand. Protecting parrotfish from overfishing helps maintain the balance of the reef ecosystem.
This small original celebrates the surprising role these colorful fish play in shaping the shores around them.
