A green sea turtle faces forward with a mouthful of seagrass as sunlight filters through the water. A Mouthful of Meadow is part of Connected by Water, a collection inspired by the places and wildlife of the Florida Reef Tract.
Adult green sea turtles spend much of their time in shallow coastal waters, grazing on seagrasses and algae. They are the only sea turtle species that is mainly herbivorous as an adult. Turtle grass, the most common seagrass in the Florida Keys, provides an important feeding ground. Their plant-rich diet is thought to give their body fat a greenish color, which is how the green sea turtle got its name.
This small original celebrates the seagrass meadows that feed these gentle grazers.
