That observation shaped this piece. In stocked waters especially, several fish will hold near each other, each tuned into the current and what it carries. I wanted to show that shared rhythm, where each Brown Trout moves with purpose but remains part of a larger flow.
The background became an important part of that story. I experimented with different techniques to build the feeling of the stream bottom and the movement of water above it. Rocks, wood, and shifting current come together to create that layered sense of motion that exists even in the quietest moments.

That idea shaped this piece. Small painted nymphs move through the current, and I tied an actual wet fly and attached it to the painting. This painting grew from memories of fishing with my dad and from the stories he used to tell about fishing with his own dad in Misery Bay. He always talked about using red and white Daredevil spoons for northern pike and how those lures were the ones that got the strike. I never got to fish with my grandfather, and now that my dad has passed, those stories mean even more. Painting this northern pike with the baby pike, the perch, and the Daredevil spoon became a way to hold onto those moments.
I added small details like the worn marks and scraped paint on the spoon and built the background to reflect the underwater grass where pike wait and watch. That process pushed me to experiment with new ways of showing movement and depth beneath the surface.

If you have ever spent time around Great Lakes tributaries in the fall, you know how closely these fish are tied to the season.
This painting grew from that connection. Having grown up just outside Erie, brown trout and steelhead have always felt like part of fall to me, especially during their spawning runs. I wanted to lean into that idea and give the piece a warm autumn feel, since most people do not immediately associate these fish with the season.
That led me to think about habitat and the way people place old Christmas trees into ponds to create structure. I started wondering what a fall version of that might look like, and pumpkins felt like the right fit. The jack-o-lantern added a sense of personality and brought a bit of humor into the scene, which made the whole piece come alive.
I used stencils and acrylic mediums to build layered texture in the plants and water, while the fish patterns and depth in the background helped tie everything together.

If you have ever looked closely at the natural world, you know it often reflects our own ideas back to us in unexpected ways.
This piece was created for a virtual exhibition challenge called Pretty in Pink, where pink needed to lead the work rather than act as an accent. That challenge pushed me into new territory and led me to paint my first saltwater fish.
While researching pink saltwater species, I was drawn to the red snapper. Learning that shrimp are part of its diet sparked the idea. We think of shrimp cocktail as something refined and familiar, so I started exploring how that idea might translate underwater. The nautilus shell became the turning point, suggesting shrimp cocktail without being literal and adding a layer of visual storytelling.
I built the piece using mixed media on a gallery wrapped wood panel, layering three dimensional textures, acrylic skins, and bold pink tones to create movement and depth throughout the coral environment.
It brings color, movement, and a sense of playful perspective into your space, a reminder that the natural world does not revolve around us.
